AGREED SEVEN YEARS AGO

Millennium Development Goal number 8

MDG 8 committed the international community to foster a global alliance for development, with an emphasis on the responsibilities of developed countries. Some of the agreed measures were:

  • Develop further an open trading and financial system that is rule-based, predictable and non-discriminatory, includes a commitment to good governance, development and poverty reduction— nationally and internationally
  • Address the least developed countries’ special needs. This includes tariff- and quota-free access for their exports; enhanced debt relief for heavily indebted poor countries; cancellation of official bilateral debt; and more generous official development assistance for countries committed to poverty reduction
These targets committed all countries to the achievement of a minimum base from which to begin building development processes that will dignify the entire population of the planet without any discrimination. However, no concrete timeline or targets were given for Goal 8.
