Features of the international situation in the pandemic and post-pandemic

This was the theme of today’s session of the 11th Regional Assembly of the Latin American Campaign for the Right to Education (CLADE), which is taking place from October 13 to November 26, this year.

Carrying out a process leading to the Assembly, a series of seven virtual public meetings are being organized, in which the current regional and international situation of the human right to education is analyzed, contributing to the definition of political action strategies for CLADE’s network in the next two years.

The sixth public event, organized by CLADE in alliance with the Argentinean Campaign for the Right to Education (CADE), the Peruvian Campaign for the Right to Education (CPDE), the Global Glocal Network for Education Quality (RGGCE) and the Space without Borders Network (ESF), had as its theme “Features of the international conjuncture in the pandemic and post-pandemic”. The opening and welcoming words were given by Alberto Croce, from the Argentine Campaign for the Right to Education and representing CLADE’s Directive Committee.

Then, Roberto Bissio, Executive Director of the Third World Institute and Social Watch, addressed the issue of the difficulties currently faced by the possibility of vaccinating the entire world population against covid19 , given the economic, patent and profit-making pressures from the laboratories that are producing them, while some countries are proposing solidarity responses at the World Trade Organization, based on other models of development and life in the post-pandemic period.

Aida García Naranjo, President of the International Council of the Network without Borders and member of the International Network of Latin American and Caribbean Women (RIMLAC), continued with the importance of articulation between the different social movements, and also between these and political currents, in order to be able to face the challenges posed by the context of the pandemic and post-pandemic.

Elena Naumkina, Team Manager, Education Programme, Open Society Foundations, asked what are the implications of the new global context for the achievement of the full right to education? Highlighting the gaps that have become apparent – as a result of the pandemic – at the social, gender, access and technological levels of education, as well as Refat Sabbah, President of the Global Campaign for Education and General Coordinator of the Arab Campaign for Education for All, developed the question of how to reinvent the global movement for the right to education and its political action in the face of the new and changing global context, pointing out the urgent need to reconnect with the local and articulate it at the national, regional and international levels.

The session concluded with the comments and questions that the participants sent to the panelists and with their final considerations, before the closing words by Alberto Croce, member of CLADE’s Directive Committee.
