Ukraine 64th in Social Watch gender equality ranking

KYIV, March 9 /UKRINFORM/. Ukraine has taken 64th place among 154 countries in terms of gender equality. The Gender Equity Index (GEI) measures the gap between women and men in education, the economy and political empowerment and ranges between 0 and 1. Ukraine's index amounted to 0.69 according to this system, according to the ranking compiled by NGO Social Watch.

Norway tops the list (0.89), whereas Niger (0.26), Chad (0.25), Yemen (0.24) and Afghanistan (0.15) are at the bottom of the table.

Among the top five countries are Finland (0.88), Iceland (0.87), Sweden (0.87) and Denmark (0.84).

Russia has taken 31st place (0.75), and the United States is 50th (0.72).

Ukraine's neighbors in the ranking are Peru (63rd place) and Belize (65th) with the index equal to 0.69.

Social Watch computes a value for the gender gap in each of the three areas in a scale from 0 (when for example no women are educated at all and all men are) to 100 (perfect equality). The GEI, in turn, is the simple average of the three dimensions. In Education, GEI looks at the gender gap in enrolment at all levels and in literacy; economic participation computes the gaps in income and employment and empowerment measures the gaps in highly qualified jobs, parliament and senior executive positions.
