The History of Social Watch

An Independent Evaluation of Work Carried Out by Social Watch 2009-2011

The following strategy paper is based on the input from the various discussions in the 5th Global Assembly of Social Watch, held in Manila, Philippines in July 12 to 15, 2011.

The 4th General Assembly of Social Watch, "People First: Social Watch's response to the global crises" was held in Accra, Ghana, from the 26 to the 29 October 2009. The Assembly was conceived as a meeting place, in which the watchers could share information and learn from each other from the discussion of issues and the generation of consensus for decision-making.

Governance Structure of Social Watch

Social Watch is an international network of citizens’ organizations struggling to eradicate poverty and the causes of poverty, to ensure an equitable distribution of wealth and the realization of human rights. Social Watch is committed to social, economic and gender justice, and emphasizes the right of all people not to be poor.

The following strategy paper is based on the input from the various discussions in the 4th General Assembly of Social Watch, held in Accra in October 26 to 29, 2009. This strategy document elaborates and updates the strategy adopted in Sofia (2006) which outlined our principles, goals and objectives.

1. Background

The III General Assembly of Social Watch was organized in Sofia, Bulgaria from the 23th to the 26th September 2006. The Bulgarian Gender Research Foundation/BGRF hosted the Assembly and received more than 100 participants from the entire world. The Assembly assessed Social Watch collective work so far, decided on future strategies and elected a new Coordinating Committee.
